Early History and Wiltshire League
The club was founded as Melksham Football Club in 1876 and became a founder member of the Wiltshire League in 1894. The team won Division One in 1903/04 and the Wiltshire Senior Cup the following season. In 1920 the club adopted the name Melksham & Avon United after moving to a ground owned by Avon Rubber, before reverting to Melksham in 1926/27.
Melksham spent decades at the Conigre, a ground within the Melksham House estate. The site developed over time, with wooden stands and fencing, covered standing areas added during the 1960s and floodlights installed in 1986. A modern stand replaced the old wooden structure in 1994.
League and Cup Progress
Melksham have a long record in Wiltshire football, including further Wiltshire Senior Cup success in 1969/70. The club later moved through the Hellenic and Western League structures, with its ambitions increasingly supported by improvements to facilities and youth football. The Conigre years were an important part of the club’s identity, but redevelopment of the site eventually required a move.
Oakfields: A New Home
In 2017, Melksham moved to Oakfields, a new £7.3 million facility shared with Melksham Rugby Club on the eastern edge of town. The first match at the new ground took place on 14 January 2017 in the FA Vase against Bristol Manor Farm, with the visitors winning 5–3 in front of 1,215 spectators. The move represented a major change after nearly a century at the Conigre, providing a modern base for the club’s future.
