Club History
Newcastle Town emerged in its current format following a merger with Parkway Clayton in 1986. The team finished runners-up in the Mid-Cheshire League in its first season after the merger and moved into the North West Counties League as a limited company in 1987. Early honours included the Mid-Cheshire League Division One title in 1985/86 and the League Cup in 1984/85, achievements that reflected the club’s roots in Staffordshire and Cheshire football.
Newcastle became a regular force in the North West Counties League. The club won the league’s Division Two Trophy in 1991/92, the Floodlit Cup in 1992/93 and 1995/96, and the League Cup in 1996/97. Its 1996/97 FA Cup run remains a landmark: victories over Winsford United, Frickley Athletic and Bamber Town took Town to the first round proper, where they narrowly lost to Notts County at Stoke City’s Victoria Ground.
The club’s long pursuit of promotion was rewarded in 2009/10. Newcastle Town led the North West Counties League Premier Division from the opening day and secured the title after winning their first 28 league matches before dropping points. The season also brought the Staffordshire Senior Cup and Jimmy Wallace Memorial Trophy, making it one of the defining campaigns in the club’s modern history.
