Origins and Early Years
Winslow United was founded in 1891, originally as Winslow Town. The club’s first recorded match took place in October that year, a 3–1 win over Granborough. In the mid-1890s the club adopted the United name after merging with local side Winslow Rovers. Early football was closely connected with town life, with matches sometimes raising money for local causes.
The club played at Great Horwood Road before moving to Elmfields Gate in 1948. Winslow built its reputation through the Buckingham and District League and North Bucks competitions before stepping up into the South Midlands League in 1968.
League Success and Cup Football
The 1970s were a high point. Winslow won the South Midlands League Division One title in 1974/75 and earned promotion to the Premier Division, where they finished runners-up the following season. The club also won the Berks & Bucks Junior Cup in 1967/68 and reached the second round of the FA Vase in 1983/84.
Like many non-league clubs, Winslow later faced difficult periods. Relegation and league restructuring during the 1990s and early 2000s interrupted progress, and the club withdrew from Spartan South Midlands League football in 2009 before returning in 2010/11. In the following years, the Ploughmen steadily rebuilt their senior side and youth structure.
Recent Revival
Winslow came close to promotion several times during the late 2010s and early 2020s. A strong 2021/22 campaign ended with a play-off defeat, but the club finally won promotion from Division One via the play-offs in 2023/24, beating Wellingborough Whitworth in the semi-final and Northampton Sileby Rangers in the final. Their first season back at Step 5 was followed by a second-place finish in 2025/26, narrowly missing the title on goal difference and securing promotion into the Southern League.
