Downham Town

The Saints — club history, honours and matchday guide.

Club overview

Downham Town are one of Norfolk’s long-established football clubs, formed in 1881 and nicknamed the Saints. Their journey has taken them through junior and senior local football into the Peterborough League and the Eastern Counties League, with the club’s official history documenting the milestones along the way.

History and honours

Downham achieved senior status when elected to the Peterborough League Premier Division for 1949/50. Winning the Peterborough League title in 1987/88 led to a move into the newly formed Eastern Counties League Division One. The Saints later won promotion to the Premier Division through the play-offs in 2022/23 and lifted the Norfolk Senior Cup in 2023/24 for the first time in almost 60 years.

After winning promotion again through the play-offs in 2024/25, Downham spent 2025/26 in the Isthmian League North before returning to the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League Premier Division for 2026/27. This recent movement through the pyramid is an important part of the club’s modern story.

Ground and matchday

For current ground address, admission, parking, facilities and fixture information, supporters should consult Downham Town’s official channels before travelling. Details can change between seasons, particularly following a club’s movement between leagues.

Club identity

The Saints’ longevity and repeated progress through regional leagues illustrate the commitment needed to sustain non-league football in a smaller Norfolk town. Cup success and play-off campaigns have helped connect different generations of supporters to the club.
