Club History

Sheppey United was formed in 1890 following a merger between Sheerness Victoria and Invicta. The club’s nickname, “The Ites”, came from an early match report describing the team as “The Sheppeyites”. The club became a founder member of both the Southern League and Kent League in 1894 and won league titles and cups during its early decades.

The sale of Botany Road in 1992 triggered a difficult nomadic period. Sheppey played home fixtures away from the island, attendance and finances suffered, and the senior club folded in 2001. A revival followed through local football, and a 2013 merger with Sheerness East led to a renewed club structure and a move to Holm Park. The club returned to the Sheppey United name in 2014 and invested in the ground, including a clubhouse, floodlights and changing facilities.

The Ites won the Kent Senior Trophy in 2016 and climbed back through the pyramid. Their modern progress has included a return to Step 4 and a renewed connection between the senior side and the island’s supporters.
