History of the Poachers

Formed in 1964 to keep senior football alive

Boston Town was established in 1964 after Boston United withdrew from senior non-league football amid financial difficulties. The new club began life as Boston FC, with Paul Todd involved in getting the side started. The team made an immediate impression by winning the Lincolnshire League in its first season, giving the town a new senior football presence and laying the foundation for the Poachers’ own story.

The club joined the Midland League and soon became a regular competitor in regional football. Boston won the Midland League championship in 1974/75 and again in 1980/81. During this period, the team also produced a memorable FA Cup run, reaching the first round proper in 1976/77 and travelling to Barnsley, where they lost 3–1. The tie remains one of the best-known cup occasions in the club’s history.

A prolific scorer and cup milestones

Gary Bull became one of Boston Town’s most celebrated players, scoring 201 goals during a seven-season spell with the club. A prolific forward can define a period for a non-league side, and Bull’s goal record remains an important part of the Poachers’ story. His scoring helped the club remain competitive across regional league campaigns and gave supporters a player whose name became closely associated with the team.

Boston also made progress in the FA Trophy and FA Vase. In 1980, the Poachers eliminated FA Trophy holders Stafford Rangers before eventually losing to Mossley. In 1993/94, they reached the FA Vase semi-final, one of the club’s most significant achievements in a national non-league cup. Those runs show how regional clubs can build a reputation through cup football as well as league positions.

The Boston Town name and further league success

The club adopted the Boston Town name in 1991 after joining the United Counties League. It went on to win the United Counties League championship in 1994/95 and again in 2000/01, adding to the earlier Midland League and Lincolnshire League titles. The club also won the Central Midlands League championship in 1988/89 during its time in that competition.

Although these championships brought silverware, the promotion system of the time meant that league titles did not always translate into a move up the pyramid. Boston Town’s 2025/26 title was therefore especially important: it was the club’s ninth league championship and the first to deliver promotion. The result ended a quarter-century wait for another league title and moved the Poachers into the Northern Premier League Midlands Division.

A permanent home at Tattershall Road

Tattershall Road has been central to the club since its early years. Boston Town’s own timeline marked 60 years at the ground in 2024. The club took ownership of the site in 2024, a major step that gave it greater control over future improvements and greater certainty over its long-term future. For a community club, ground ownership can provide a platform for investment, commercial activity and facilities that support football beyond the first team.

The stadium is now known as the Mortgages For You Stadium through sponsorship. The ground remains a local sports venue with a long connection to Boston Town, and the 2026/27 Step 4 season brings a new set of visitors to Tattershall Road. The promotion provides both sporting opportunity and a reason to continue improving the matchday experience.

Boston Town and Lincolnshire Football

The Poachers are part of a busy football landscape in Lincolnshire, where clubs have competed across county leagues, the Midland League, the United Counties League and the national pyramid. Their history shows how clubs can take different routes to success: early league titles, cup runs, rebuilding periods and, more recently, the opportunity to move up following a championship.

For 2026/27, the Northern Premier League Midlands Division provides Boston Town with opponents from across the Midlands and neighbouring counties. The league will test the squad and the club’s resources, but it also brings new away-day opportunities and the chance to build the Poachers’ reputation at Step 4. The Tattershall Road ground ownership milestone gives the club an important foundation for that next phase.

NonLeagueReview Ground Notes

Boston Town’s story is about persistence as much as trophies. Formed in 1964 after the town’s previous senior club withdrew, the Poachers built their own record through regional titles, national cup ties and decades at Tattershall Road. The 2025/26 championship is a landmark because it finally delivered promotion, while the purchase of the ground in 2024 gives the club greater control over its future. For groundhoppers, the 2026/27 season offers a new opportunity to visit the Poachers at their long-standing home.
