Origins and Early Years

Hertford Town’s early story grew from the merger of Port Vale Rovers, founded in 1901, with other local teams to create a side representing the town. The club initially played at Hartham Common. In 1908, the absorption of Blue Cross led to a move to Hertingfordbury Park, which has been the club’s home for well over a century.

Hertford competed in local leagues before establishing itself in the regional non-league structure. The club won the East Herts League in 1912/13 and 1913/14, and the Herts Charity Shield has also featured repeatedly in its honours list. The ground’s long history is part of the club’s identity, closely linked to the town and the nearby rivers Lee and Mimram.

League Success and Mid-century Football

Hertford won the Spartan League Eastern Section in 1949/50. The post-war era also saw changes to the ground: a covered terrace was erected in 1950 and extended the following year. The main stand, seating around 200, was built in 1959 after an earlier stand had burned down in 1946. Floodlights were installed in 1956 and upgraded in 1965.

The club enjoyed a particularly successful spell in the Delphian League, winning the championship in 1960/61 and 1961/62, then the Eastern Division and League Cup in 1962/63. Further honours included the Athenian League Memorial Shield in 1967/68 and the Eastern Counties League Cup in 1972/73. Hertford later competed in the Isthmian League structure and continued to be a regular presence in the Hertfordshire senior game.

Recent Progress

In 2017 Hertford Town were offered a place in the Isthmian League after another club declined promotion. The club’s journey has continued through regional league reorganisations and changes in the national pyramid. For 2026/27, Hertford are listed in the Southern League Division One Central.
