Stadium Guide
Kettering Town play at Latimer Park in Burton Latimer, just outside Kettering. The Poppies moved there after a turbulent period in the early 2010s, when a move to Nene Park and financial problems led to further upheaval. The club has since rebuilt its position at Latimer Park, which is shared with Burton Park Wanderers and has become the home of the modern Poppies.
The club’s contact and directions page lists a capacity of 3,029, including 606 seats, and a grass playing surface. Its published directions advise leaving the A14 at Junction 10 and following signs towards Latimer Business Park. The club also lists bus services linking the ground area with Kettering railway station, but timetables should always be checked for the date and time of travel.
In 2026, the club announced that it had secured a new 50-year lease at Latimer Park. The club said the agreement would provide a basis for future investment, including plans for new floodlights and a 4G pitch. Club History
1872–1914: formation and regional football. Kettering Town were formed in 1872 and turned professional in 1891. They moved through a succession of regional leagues in their early decades and won the Midland Football League title in 1895–96 and 1899–1900. The club’s early success helped establish the Poppies as a leading name in Northamptonshire football.
1920s–1950s: Southern League champions. Kettering won the Southern League championship in 1927–28 and again in 1956–57, the latter during the playing era of former England international Tommy Lawton. The club also won the Birmingham League title in 1947–48. These campaigns established a pattern of success at the highest levels of non-league football available at the time.
1970s: Ron Atkinson and a commercial landmark. Under player-manager Ron Atkinson, Kettering won the Southern League Division One North title in 1972–73 and moved into the Premier Division. On 24 January 1976, the club became the first British side to play with a sponsor’s name on its shirts, following a deal with local business Kettering Tyres. The Football Association initially objected, but the episode became a landmark in the commercial development of the game; shirt sponsorship was permitted across English football in 1977.
1979–2001: national prominence and Wembley finals. Kettering were founding members of the Alliance Premier League in 1979 and finished runners-up in the Football Conference on several occasions. They reached the FA Trophy final in 1978–79, losing to Stafford Rangers, and again in 1999–2000, losing 3–2 to Kingstonian. In the FA Cup, the Poppies reached the fourth round in 1988–89 and 2008–09, when a memorable run brought a home tie against Premier League Fulham.
2001–2011: titles, promotion and another FA Cup run. Kettering won the Southern League in 2001–02 to return to the Conference, then claimed the Conference North title in 2007–08. Their 2008–09 FA Cup run included wins over Lincoln City and Notts County before the 4–2 fourth-round defeat to Fulham. The club remained in the top tier of non-league football until a financially difficult period and a move to Nene Park in 2011 led to relegation and instability.
2012–2024: rebuilding and a return to Step 2. After ground-sharing at Corby and moving to Latimer Park, Kettering rebuilt on the pitch. They won Southern League Division One Central in 2014–15 and the Southern League Premier Division Central title in 2018–19, earning promotion to the National League North. Later seasons brought further challenges and relegation, and the club returned to the Southern League Premier Division Central. In May 2024, ownership changed, beginning a new phase for the club.
2026: a more secure home base. The club announced a new 50-year lease for Latimer Park in 2026, describing it as a foundation for long-term investment and stability. The Poppies continue in the Southern League Premier Division Central in 2026/27.

Ron Atkinson is a central figure in the Poppies’ history, leading the team as player-manager during the 1972–73 Southern League title campaign. Derek Dougan, who was involved as player-manager and chief executive in the 1970s, helped broker the pioneering shirt-sponsorship deal. Tommy Lawton, the former England international, was associated with the club’s 1956–57 Southern League championship. These figures reflect Kettering’s long tradition of attracting high-profile players and managers from across the game.
Rivalries and Regional Context
Kettering’s Northamptonshire base places them in a football region with strong local interest and historic contests against nearby clubs. Corby Town have been a notable regional opponent, including cup meetings that have carried local significance.
