Club History

Bedford FC origins

The club’s official background traces its roots to Bedford FC, established in 2002 after the merger of Bedford United and US Valerio. For many years the side competed in local non-league football at McMullen Park, building the foundation for the modern club.

New ownership and the Real Bedford name

Peter McCormack acquired the club in 2021 and set out a plan to build a sustainable organisation capable of taking Bedford football up the pyramid. The team adopted the Real Bedford name in 2022. In 2024, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss joined as co-owners. The project has included ambitions for facilities, academy pathways and a wider community programme, alongside the senior team’s league campaign.

Three successive league championships

The men’s team won the Spartan South Midlands League Division One in 2022/23, the Premier Division in 2023/24 and the Southern League Division One Central in 2024/25. The 2024/25 side finished with 104 points from 40 matches, scoring 129 goals and conceding 33, according to the Football Club History Database. The third title in succession took the Pirates into the Southern League Premier Central for 2025/26.

In 2025/26 Real Bedford finished third in the Southern League Premier Central and reached the play-offs. They defeated Kettering Town in the semi-final before losing the final to Spalding United. The club remains in the division for 2026/27.

Women’s football and community development

The club’s development has included a growing women’s programme and a wider range of youth teams. Following a partnership with Bedford Ladies and Girls in 2023, the women’s side won the Eastern Region Women’s Premier Division and League Cup in 2023/24, then the FA Women’s National League Division One South East in 2024/25. The club’s wider structure includes boys’ and girls’ teams and an academy pathway.
