Club History
FC United of Manchester was founded on 13 May 2005 following widespread opposition amongst Manchester United supporters to the Glazer family’s leveraged takeover of the club. The aim was to create a democratic football club run by supporters and accessible to ordinary fans.
Starting in the North West Counties League Division Two, FC United enjoyed remarkable early success. Under manager Karl Marginson, the club achieved three promotions in its first three seasons and quickly became one of the best-supported clubs in non-league football.
For much of its early existence, FC United played home matches at Bury’s Gigg Lane before launching an ambitious plan to build a permanent home in Manchester. After years of fundraising and planning challenges, Broadhurst Park opened in May 2015, largely funded through community shares purchased by supporters.
Today FC United remains one of the largest supporter-owned football clubs in Europe and continues to champion affordable football, community engagement and democratic ownership.
