Club History
Sutton United was formed in 1898 through the merger of Sutton Guild Rovers and Sutton Association FC. The club spent much of its early history in the Athenian League before becoming a force in the Isthmian League.
The club first gained national recognition through a series of famous FA Cup runs. The greatest upset came in January 1989 when Sutton defeated First Division Coventry City 2-1 in one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history. Coventry had won the FA Cup only two years earlier and were among the strongest teams in England at the time.
Another remarkable cup run followed in 2016/17 when Sutton reached the Fifth Round of the FA Cup, defeating Cheltenham Town, AFC Wimbledon and Leeds United before hosting Arsenal in front of a global television audience. The run brought unprecedented exposure to the club and helped fund major improvements to the stadium.
The greatest achievement in the club’s history arrived in 2021 when Sutton won the National League title and secured promotion to the Football League for the first time. The U’s spent three seasons in League Two before returning to the National League in 2024.
