Stockport County 1-3 Gainsborough Trinity – Match Report

Gainsborough Trinity completed a league double over Stockport County and with it eased any fears from possible relegation with a deserved win at Edgeley Park.

They took the lead and went in ahead at the break after what was for the main part a largely uneventful opening 45 minutes. Pacy forward Chris Hamilton on 39 minutes with a deflected effort that looped over County Keeper Danny Hurst the difference at the interval.

Within five minutes of the restart Hamilton could have made it two, good work down the right found the striker free in the box, again his shot beat Hurst but came rebounding back off the woodwork before strike partner Stephen Brogan fired the rebound wide.

Not doubling their lead could have proved costly for Gainsborough as County were level with the very next attack, Scott Spencer rose highest to meet a Danny Glover cross and he sent a looping header beyond Rory Watson into the top corner.

As it were Garry Forrest restored the lead minutes later for Gainsborough with a header of his own, he was unmarked at the far post and met Jamie Yates cross with a thumping header leaving Hurst no chance.

Hamilton made sure of the win in injury time with his second of the game, he rounded Hurst and slid a shot goalwards which County captain Mark Lees chased back but couldn’t save from crossing the line.

After the game County boss Alan Lord said he was disappointed with the performance after gifting Gainsborough three goals, and takes full responsibility.

Also adding he can’t argue with some of the fans criticism but hasn’t felt verbal abuse like that after the final whistle in 16 years at the club.
