Bacup & Rossendale Borough earned a hard fought point in a goalless draw away at Winsford United on Tuesday night

Manager Brent Peters just made the one change to the loss at Congleton with Gareth Wager dropping out due to injury and Shane Birtles stepping in.

The first half didn’t grace much goal mouth action at all to be honest with Simon Thompson snatching wide for Bacup then the only real half chance of the first 45 was when Dominic Marie who was captaining the Borough on his birthday played a quick one-two with Michael Gervin but Marie’s shot was poked straight at the goalkeeper.

With both sides battling hard to carve out a clear goal scoring opportunity it certainly wasn’t happening in the first half as Marie’s free-kick right on the whistle dipped just over the crossbar.

Half-Time: Winsford 0-0 Bacup

The second half had to be better than the first with both shapes cancelling each other out and it did become more of an open spectacle as the home side tried to find a second gear and nearly took the lead when a corner ghosted through every single body in the penalty area.

BARB however were still looking lively when going on the front foot and a swift breakaway saw Gervin’s shot deflect into the path of Daniel Holt who instead of trying his luck first time took a touch to steady himself and then strike however it fell straight into the keeper’s arms.

I sensed the feeling that just one goal would win this game and Bacup came close again as Michael Gervin stunningly turned his man effortlessly but his shot dragged just wide of the right-hand post.

Into the final 15 minutes and it appeared the visitors had a shout for a penalty as Matty Bryan put the turbo on and was knocked off balance and onto the ground however the referee wasn’t convinced.

With the home side pushing for a goal they and everyone else in the ground must have thought it was 1-0 when Andy Carroll lookalike Riley guided a header powerfully towards the back of the net from a corner when NWCFL goalkeeper of the month for February Josh Harris incredibly dived full stretch to fingertip the ball onto the post and away somehow.

Having said all of that it appeared the match was always destined for a goalless draw and that indeed it ended that way.

Full-Time: Winsford 0-0 Bacup
