Eagle Sports 2-0 Waterloo Dock
Eagle Sports secured a place in the Liverpool County Challenge Cup Final with a 2-0 win over Waterloo Dock FC at Thornton Road.
Second half goals from Danny Nixon and Ged McAllister were enough to see off the Merseyside outfit and send Eagle through to the final.
In a tough first half both teams struggled to cope with the solid ground as the ball would not settle on the turf and the wind was strong.
Free flowing football was in short supply although Waterloo did manage a few efforts from long range, however nothing to worry Eagles stopper Neil McDermott.
A dull half of football was epitomised by only one save needed from both keepers; McDermott will be happy with his point blank stop at the feet of former Rochdale striker Raymond Putterill.
The home side came out with renewed vigour and took the game to Waterloo for the first fifteen minutes.
Special instructions seemed to have gone to Eagles winger James Waldron whose energy and pace caused constant problems for the opposition defence.
In the 51st minute a long throw from Waldron put McAllister in behind the Waterloo Dock centre backs, his lay off was met just inside the area by Nixon and his left footed shot found the bottom corner.
Seven minutes later Waldron was at it again; chasing down a long clearance from a Waterloo corner the speedy winger managed to keep the ball in play on the far right side.
His slide-cum-pass to Lee Boardman was the start of a counter attack that left the away side haplessly looking at one another.
Boardman collected the ball and held it up expertly as Waldron got back to his feet and bombed into the area on the overlap, he met Boardman’s lay-off and squared the ball for McAllister to tap in from close range.
The central defensive pair for Eagle of Richard Chinn and Jon Shakeshaft were exceptional from start to finish and played a huge part in keeping Waterloo at bay even when tempers began to flare late on.
