Rochdale Town 1-3 Litherland Remyca
Saturday 14th February 2015, North West Counties League Division 1
Remyca kept the pressure on the top half of the table with an impressive 1-3 win at Rochdale Town today. After a stop-start couple of months it was great to get a game on, in reasonable conditions…… and of course to get a win!
Following an enforced layoff it was good to experience game time and with both teams eager to gain a result this was a feisty encounter from the outset. A very stop-start game and inconsistent decisions did not help matters as tempers flared. REMYCA were the team trying to play football on what was an uneven surface as Rochdale looked to close down and move the ball forward quickly. Jamie Colbourn got the scoring going as early as 12 minutes into the game, Centre Forward Colin McDonald had been involved upsetting the Rochdale back line with his presence and all action style,on 12 mins he made a great run and crossed for Jamie Colbourne to net from close range.
Colin McDonald continued to have a major presence in the match, doubling Litherland’s advantage on 33 minutes, bursting through the defensive line and striking a superb effort across the keeper.
Early into the second half Phil Stancombe put the game pretty much out of reach with the third goal putting Litherland 3-0 up on 46 minutes, the ball struck hard into the Rochdale goalmouth and Stancombe did well to connect and stick the ball into the net. Rochdale reminded Remyca not to take their feet off the pedal when Ryan Burgess pegged one back on 47 minutes, almost straight from the re-start the ball was played long and direct towards the Remyca 12 yard box and Burgess pounced to give Sean Lake very little chance to make a save. The game remained a tight and combative affair, constant interruptions for set-pieces made this a difficult one to watch at times.
The game finished 3-1 and Remyca climb to 9th in the table, 7 points off the play-off places. It’s still all to play for and whilst the play-offs remain unlikely for us, we keep the pressure on the teams who also have maybe half an eye on those much coveted spots.
