SPHINX COME BACK TO EARN A POINT

Westfields let a one goal lead slip to allow Coventry Sphinx a share in the points this afternoon. This point see’s Fields stay in 11th place, one place behind 10th placed AFC Wulfrunians.

An open start to the game saw both teams popping the ball around the pitch eager to get a foot hold on the game.

It was Sphinx who had the first chance of the game when an Ashley Cain free kick was superbly saved by Fields debutant Harvey Rivers. Rivers’ save resulted in a corner which lead to Sphinx’s opener on 5 minutes. A failed corner went straight back out to the winger whose resulting cross fell to the unmarked Ashley Jackson who headed home from 6 yards out.

A Sphinx opener was a much needed wake up call for Westfields whose first chance of the game fell to attacker Jamie Cuss who smartly found space in the 6 yard box before dragging his shot wide of Murphy’s goal.

Fields Stopper Rivers was in the thick of the action again producing an outstanding reaction save to keep them in the game.

After missing his first chance, Cuss made up for his earlier error on the 25th minute. When Cuss was sent through the middle of the pitch he managed to wriggle into space, putting Murphy on the floor sending his a left footed shot curling round Murphy and into the bottom corner.

Two goals in Two minutes and Fields were in front. Intelligent play from Griffiths saw his curling cross met by the glancing head of Dean Lee who diverted his header into the far corner.

Confidence was flowing after two goals and it was showing as Craig Jones sent his shot inches wide of the post minutes before Tom Boyle found himself 6 yards out from goal before blazing his shot over the crossbar.

Half Time: Westfields 2-1 Coventry Sphinx

The Half time break didn’t seem to have an effect on Westfields as they started the Second Half as they finished the first. Tom Boyle had a great chance to widen the gap as he wasn’t sent bursting through on goal, but the powerful forward saw his effort fly harmlessly over the bar.

A lot of Fields pressure was coming from the left hand side as both Dean Lee & Dom Njoya were tormenting full back Jack Downes with their speed and power.

After a slow start to the Second Half Sphinx were beginning to build up momentum. Harvey Rivers was called into action once again as he kept out another Sphinx shot.

Fields were undone in the 65th minute when Sphinx Midfielder Jack Rooney found space on the edge of the 18 yard box, before shifting onto his right foot and sending a low driven shot out of the reach of Rivers and into the bottom corner.

A spell of pressure saw Substitute Aaron Opoku glide past two Fields Defenders before disappointingly sending his shot straight into the body of the advancing Rivers. Opoku previously known to have been at Hereford United was causing a lot of problems for the Fields back four.

A moment of appeal; Westfields saw a goal appeal waved away as Sphinx Keeper Murphy saw the ball squirm under his body and creep towards the line before reclaiming the ball. Fields fans, management and players all ran to appeal but the referee waved away to protests.

Cuss & Lee’s goals were not enough to earn Fields all three points, but a point see’s them stay in 11th place in the table.
