Barnton 6-1 Wigan RP – Match Report

Barnton made light work of seeing off Wigan Robin Park after a fantastic performance saw them run out 6-1 winners.

After seeing the teamsheet before the game, my first reaction was goals, and I wasn’t wrong. A debut for new signing Shaun Tuck alongside James McShane up-front, with captain Colin Quirk in behind proved fruitful, with the trio bagging 5 of the 6 goals between them.

It didn’t take long for Barnton to get off the mark and it was Tuck involved, winning a penalty which Quirk cooly dispatched on 15 minutes, the captain then doubled the advantage with a tremendous strike from 25 yards out just 2 minutes later.

However goal of the game came midway through the first half when ex Barnton striker Joe Jennings pulled one back for Wigan Robin Park with a stunning 25 yard left footed strike that left Danny Lever no chance.

It looked like Wigan RP could get back into the game and a 2-1 lead was looking nervy as we approached the half-time interval, however a quickfire double from Barnton saw them lead 4-1 with Tuck getting his debut goal and right back Jesse Robinson adding a fourth right on the whistle.

Tuck grabbed his second, Barnton’s fifth, ten minutes after the interval and was promptly subbed soon after, his first appearance after a lengthy spell out of the game had been a success as he worked tirelessly for the team.

It was left to James McShane to complete the scoring when he headed home at the far post on 72 minutes to seal a comfortable and comprehensive victory for Allan Glovers side.

Following the victory, Barnton moved up to 3rd in the league table and look a very good bet for the play-offs at least this season, we spoke to Glover after the game who has only suffered defeat once since taking over at Townfield, which came against league favourites Atherton Collieries with a further draw and 4 wins a respectable record. He admits there’s a long way to go, but the early signs are good as he continues to build a team he hopes will cement that play-off spot.
