Atherton Collieries have reached the Lancashire Challenge Cup Semi-Final after a hard fought victory over EvoStik NPL Premier Division side Ramsbottom United.
It was the eighth time Colls had come up against higher league opposition this season and the seventh time they’ve been successful.
Their only defeat came against Radcliffe Boro on a penalty shoot-out in the FA Cup, and Incidentally it was Radcliffe, Colls saw off in the previous round of the Lancs Cup, again on a penalty shoot-out gaining some form of revenge.
Both Colls and Ramsbottom fielded strong sides in what was near freezing conditions on what also looked like a tough playing surface.
Colls started bright and took the lead through Mark Truffas on 15 minutes, and Jordan Cover scored what turned out to be the winner with 20 minutes to go to make it 2-0.
It was a nervy last 15 minutes however as a Grant Spencer free-kick found the top corner to make it 2-1 and reduce the deficit, but Colls held on to book their place in the semi-final.
In the evenings other Quarter Final tie, Holker Old Boys came from 3-1 behind to defeat Daisy Hill 5-3 at New Sirs.
Both teams await the winners of tonight’s ties, where Chorley host AFC Darwen and Bamber Bridge host Clitheroe, as they aim to complete the semi-final line up.
