County made it into the FA Trophy first round after a professional if not spectacular performance at Edgeley Park. First half goals from Scott Spencer and Kristian Dennis did the damage while a late Danny Taylor goal for Colwyn Bay made for a nervy final 10 minutes, especially after the dismissal of Chris Churchman for County as the game entered four minutes of injury time.
The Hatters got off to the perfect start as Spencer slotted home on 5 minutes. He got on the end of a Jamie Milligan free kick and rounded the keeper to score into the empty net. County were then forced into an early change as Scott Duxbury on his first start after missing 9 games through injury was forced off after only 12 minutes. Despite the change County remained in charge and doubled the lead 6 minutes before the break, top score Kristian Dennis bagged his 12th goal of the season in spectacular fashion, cutting in from the right onto his favoured left foot and unleashing a shot into the bottom corner.
Colwyn Bay made more of a game in the second half and were rewarded for their efforts when Danny Taylor pulled one back after Obi Anoruo’s shot came back off the post. However it wasn’t enough and County held on to be included in Monday’s draw.
