MEN United Cup – 3rd Round Preview

1874 Northwich v Colne
Arguably the tie of the round is this one. High flying 1874 versus a strong Colne side capable of pulling off a upset. 1874 are flying at the moment and are on a 18 game unbeaten run. Recent results include a 4-1 win away at Bishop Auckland in the FA Vase and a fantastic 1-0 win over league rivals and fellow title challengers Glossop North End. The league fixture between these two was a close affair a few weeks ago up at Colne with 1874 running out 1-0 winners. Expect a similar tight affair again this time.
1874 Northwich 2-1 Colne FC

Abbey Hey v Atherton Collieries
A few weeks ago many wouldn’t think twice about tipping Colls for the win, however recent results have not gone Colls way, loosing back to back games in the FA Vase and this midweek in the league to Northwich Flixton Villa. Abbey Hey have turned round their poor early season form and are currently enjoying a good run of only 2 defeats in the last 9 games.
Abbey Hey 2-2 Atherton Collieries

Alsager v AFC Liverpool
These sides met on the opening day of the season where AFC Liverpool ran out 1-0 winners. Since then Liverpool have found goals easier to come by, scoring 7 in a recent win over St Helens. Both sides made the 3rd round with 3-2 wins, Alsager seeing off First Division side Daisy Hill while Liverpool saw off Bacup with a 90th minute winner from Ronnie Morgan.
Alsager 0-3 AFC Liverpool

Bootle v AFC Darwen
Bootle are without a win since last months 2-0 victory over Oldham Boro in the 2nd round of the MEN United cup, a run which stretches to 7 games. Darwen have been a victim of the weather recently and will no doubt be facing a fixture backlog soon with 5 of the last 7 games being postponed, twice including the FA Vase tie against Chadderton.
Bootle 2-0 AFC Darwen

Glossop North End v Widnes
Glossop come into the game after 1874 Northwich put an end to their 11 game winning run in midweek. They’ll also be hoping for an easier tie than in Round 2 where it took a 90th minute own goal to rescue a draw against AFC Blackpool and to take the tie to extra time and penalties where they prevailed, winning 4-2 on spot kicks. Widnes themselves needed a 90th minute equaliser in Round 2 where they themselves then went on to win on penalties against Premier Division side St Helens Town.
Glossop North End 3-1 Widnes

Runcorn Town v Cammell Laird 1907
Runcorn Town are very much a good cup side this year, excellent runs in the FA Cup and Vase see them playing catch up in the league where their form is somewhat inconsistent. 3 of their last 4 wins have been in various cup competitions and they’ll start as favourite against First Division opposition. Lairds currently sit top of the First Division and are in excellent form. A 1-0 win over Runcorn Linnets in Round 2 shows they’ll certainly be no pushovers.
Runcorn Town 2-1 Cammell Laird 1907

Squires Gate v Winsford United
One loss in 10 for Gate sees them in good form, and a great 3-1 win over Nelson in the last round set up this tie at home to Winsford. Losing striker Jack Sowerby must have been a blow, but it’s not affecting the clubs recent results. Winsford needed 87th and 90th minute goals to come from 1-0 down to defeat Irlam in the last round. Since then they’ve managed just the 1 win in 4 games.
Squires Gate 2-0 Winsford United

West Didsbury & Chorlton v Rochdale Town
Just the one win in 7 for West Dids since their win over Ashton Town in the last round, again a team who needed extra time and penalties to overcome lower league opposition. Rochdale themselves needed extra time and penalties to overcome Hanley Town, they then won their next 2 games before currently suffering 3 straight defeats.
West Didsbury & Chorlton 2-2 Rochdale Town
