#5MinuteFriday – Kevin Gallagher

It’s absolutely fantastic when former professionals give something back to the game we all love. Especially at the lower levels of the pyramid when grassroots and Non-League football benefit. In the past week or so the Non-League scene was boosted when news of Salford City’s takeover by the class of 92 made the headlines.

Now not quite getting the publicity of the class of 92, another Premier League champion winner this time with Blackburn Rovers in Kevin Gallagher has joined forces with AFC Darwen from the North West Counties Football League Division one. Here we got 5 minutes and caught up with Kevin as he told us about how he got involved with AFC Darwen and his plans for the future.

I met with AFC Darwen owner Kenny and new club chairman Wayne they asked me to be part of the club in helping them move forward. They told me of their visions and what they see for the future of the club it looks exciting and i felt like i wanted to be part of it.

My initial involvement will be to help staff in coaching and developing the players with all my experiences and knowledge, aswell as attracting players to the club and anything else that needs looked at.

Afc Darwen will have a new venture with Blackburn College to create a centre of excellence which is a major plus in moving forward, providing young local talent with professional coaching and development facilities giving them the experience of playing in a semi pro set up.

Grass roots football is important at this level as we see so many youngsters putting their eggs in one basket to become a footballer, with a small percentage of them making it. That is why when players drop down levels, non league football should not be overlooked as this could be a new pathway for a new beginning.

Afc Darwen had a tremendous history dating back many years but had bad times and almost ceased to exist but a lot of hard work and community effort has seen the club come back and hopefully the people that are involved now can take it a little further and bring back the good times.

We look forward to watching the progress of Kevin and AFC Darwen and hope to catch them for a game soon.
