Cheadle Town V Stockport Sports
Plenty of goals but the premier side Stockport to nick it. 4-2 Stockport for me.
If you read my preview you might remember those words as the last ones I used in the write up. Out of the 17 who voted on the poll, 10 agreed with me and voted for a Stockport win. Well what do we know? Congratulations to Cheadle and the 7 who voted for them to win.
Instead of the ‘plenty of goals’ prediction, we were treated to a hard fought 1-0 win for the lower ranked home side, and what should we have expected with a tense local derby in the 1st round proper of the FA Vase.
The 1st half was pretty evenly matched, with the home side maybe carving out the best chances. An early goal was chalked off for offside and the Stockport keeper had clearances closed down on 2 occasions. The sides went in level at the break and after a fiesty 45 minutes we were left to eagerly anticipate the 2nd half.
Stockport started the 2nd half brightly and applied plenty of pressure in the opposition half but couldn’t find a way through. Then on 69 minutes Cheadle were awarded a penalty. Stockport keeper was lucky not to see red as he raced out to deny the attack and brought down the striker just in the box. It was up to captain Andy Lindon to step up to convert the penalty and he did just that, but only just. He struck the penalty well against the edge Of the post but it had enough on it to nestle in the opposite corner. As you’d expect after the goal it was pretty much one way traffic, with the Cheadle team relying on Keeper Piggott to make some fine saves along with some woeful finishing from Stockport. Stockport did have the ball in the net in the dying minutes but was ruled out for a foul. Could have been given either way for me that one. A corner was well delivered and the header crashed off the crossbar and then the ball was bundled home. Anyway, Cheadle saw out the last few minutes and in the end pretty much deserved the victory. Stockport very much a changed side from last time I watched them in the 1st qualifying round, where they crushed Atherton 5-0 and although that was my 1st time at Cheadle I’m sure I’ll be back again. Good luck in Mondays draw and maybe see you back at Park Road Stadium in the 2nd round.
